EPG Spring Workshop Recap: Boston Highlights with Stephen Burgoyne and Ben Morse

In April 2025, CMHA’s Emerging Professionals Group (EPG) hosted its Spring Workshop in Boston—thanks to the leadership and local insight of two engaged members, Stephen Burgoyne of Ideal Block and Ben Morse of Jandris Block.

From planning and coordination to tours and training, the Boston workshop offered a hands-on look at the industry, leadership development, and what it means to be part of the next generation of concrete masonry and hardscape professionals.

Building Confidence, Community, and Career Growth

Stephen Burgoyne has been active in EPG since 2018 and has seen the group evolve. “My first experience with EPG is one I’ll never forget—I was unexpectedly placed on a panel alongside long-standing ICPI members who had likely been attending meetings since I was in diapers,” he shared.

That nerve-wracking experience turned out to be a turning point. “It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped build my confidence speaking in front of a crowd.”

For Ben Morse, who’s been active in EPG for the past four years, the appeal lies in the peer-to-peer engagement. “What I enjoy most is interacting with other producers and vendors to share our experiences and collaborate on new business ideas,” he said.

What It’s Like to Host an EPG Workshop

Hosting a workshop requires time, coordination, and vision. Both Stephen and Ben stepped up to the challenge—and found it well worth the effort.

“I was nervous,” Stephen admitted. “I worried the content might not justify the trip for attendees. But one of the most refreshing comments came from someone who told me, ‘This experience was eye-opening… I never get to see how the products our machines produce are installed.’ That made it all worth it.”

Ben also praised the process. “It was a seamless and pleasant experience,” he said. “CMHA staff helped coordinate with Ideal and Jandris and led regular planning calls to keep things moving. Everyone collaborated to make sure we created a fulfilling experience in Boston.”

Why You Should Host a Future EPG Event

Stephen encourages other EPG members to consider hosting a future workshop.

“For members who tend to be hard on themselves, I strongly encourage it. Inviting others to your facility helps you step back, recognize your progress, and appreciate your work. Plus, I connected with people who don’t normally attend meetings—because their roles don’t allow it. That made the experience even more meaningful.”

Ben added, “Hosting helps expose your business to members who may not be familiar with what you do. It’s a great way to work closely with CMHA and get your company’s name out there.”

Highlights from Boston

From classroom sessions to ballpark tours, the Boston Workshop was packed with standout moments.

For both hosts, one session stood out: the public speaking workshop. “It was my favorite part,” Stephen said. “Hearing from a professional speaker about her own nerves and how to manage them was so reassuring—and the tips on layout and engagement were incredibly helpful.”

Ben agreed. “That and the Fenway Park tour were the highlights for me. The combination of fun and professional development made it a well-rounded experience.”

Looking Ahead

As hosts, both Stephen and Ben walked away from the experience with a renewed sense of purpose—and an even deeper appreciation for their industry.

“I gained a renewed appreciation for our area,” Stephen said. “You forget how exciting your city can be until you share it with others.”

Ben added, “The group left Boston with a sense of camaraderie and fulfillment. We advanced professional development while having fun—and that’s exactly what we set out to do.”

Ready to Get Involved?

Whether you’ve been involved with EPG for years or are just getting started, consider taking the next step: host a future workshop.

As Stephen shared, “Every time I participate in something like this through CMHA, it gives me professional development opportunities I wouldn’t normally get within my company. And that kind of growth is invaluable.”
